1996 was a good year. Brendan Benson’s debut came out- and so did another record “Mic City Sons” by a Portland group named Heatmiser. (VRA 1996) Fronted by a true soul – Elliot Smith – this album is a treasure- The feel, the soul, the grace- all there. Of course we know Elliot Smith went on to great places as a solo artist, and became a poster-child for the indie jet set - He helped clear a path for artists like Bright Eyes to let it her rip- just do what feels true. Just like Kurt Cobain- Elliot shared some amazin’ tunes in his creative life- It’s enough that you are exposing your soul to the world- but the world always wants more, more, and more. “Some folks can not be satisfied, they just want somebody to ride. “ The lyrics were an ominous warning for the years ahead. Dig the sexy low-end of pre-solo, rock and roll group process.
